7 Tracks That Rocked Falls Festival 2014 / 15

7 January 2015 | 12:12 pm | Tony Kingston

We went along to the second Byron Bay Falls Festival and sussed out 7 tracks which made the event truly epic. Check them out here!

The line up for Falls Festival 2014/15 was one of the best we've seen so far, with acts including ALT-J, SBTRKT, GLASS ANIMALS, TODD TERJE, TYCHO, JAGWAR MA, RUN THE JEWELS and many more, all making their way onto stages situated in Lorne, Marion Bay and the recently added Byron Bay site.

We went along to the second Byron Bay Falls Festival and sussed out 7 tracks which made the event truly epic. Until next time, here we give you the sounds which made our experience one to remember!

BADBADNOTGOOD 'CS60'

At the beginning of BBNG's set there was very little movement in the crowd and most people were seen simply staring at the stage. Perhaps it was because the band were so different to every other act on the bill, or because people were so amazed by their obvious talent that they were left motionless. All three members of Canada's BADBADNOTGOOD played flawlessly throughout their entire performance and once their heavier song 'CS60' came on, they had a large portion of the crowd on their feet jumping up and down enthusiastically.

ASGEIR 'Heart Shaped Box' (NIRVANA Cover)

I was just sitting on the grass casually drinking my beer and thought to myself, well this ASGEIR guy is nice and chilled. I have to admit though, I wasn't overly impressed..then he played this. His smooth, mesmerising voice and delicate piano lines really had my mind somewhere else during this amazing interpretation. What a wonderful cover!

LORDE 'Tennis Court' (FLUME Remix) - Played by ALISON WONDERLAND

As a massive storm made its way over the Byron Bay festival site, ALISON WONDERLAND played the ultimate party set to close in the new year. She provided bangers such as RL GRIME & WHAT SO NOT's 'Tell Me', DANNY BROWN's 'Dip' and her own single 'I Want U', but what really created a special moment was when she concluded 2014 with FLUME's remix of 'Tennis Court'. Also, how about those confetti explosions?

TYCHO 'Past Is Prologue'

Before I entered the festival grounds, I was skeptical as to how TYCHO's show would work during the day. The first Falls Festival in Byron Bay (2013/14) had a completely open air Forest Stage, which would have made it very ineffective for an AV performance of this kind.

Thankfully, this time around the stage was situated in an enormous tent, which created an appropriate setting for TYCHO's visually renowned show. Most of the tracks he played were from his most recent album 'Awake' but the peak of his set for me was when I heard his classic 2004 drum and bass inspired tune 'Past Is Prologue'.

TORA 'Jaigantic'

The biggest surprise of the festival were Byron Bay's electronic five piece TORA! The boys played a set each day across two stages throughout the event, but their biggest was when they closed the Forest Stage on the afternoon of New Years Eve. The band demonstrated an impressive amount of energy and got the crowd grooving along to their catchy tracks such as 'Calming Her', 'Sugar Snap', 'Get Like Her' and their latest single 'Jaigantic'. I was so into their performance I decided to go back for seconds when they played an intimate set on a smaller stage later the next evening. Definitely an act to keep an eye out for in 2015!

NORTHEAST PARTY HOUSE 'Covered In Chrome' (VIOLENT SOHO Cover)

This Melbourne act had been on my radar for quite sometime now. 'Any Given Weekend' was one of my most played Australian albums of 2014 and their live show is always very fun and energetic, something I'd describe as across between a punk rock show and a dance party.

It certainly made perfect sense to me that they played directly after DZ DEATHRAYS' ferocious set. 'Youth Allowance', 'The Haunted' and even the slow build up of 'You And I' all received a great response but it wasn't until they unleashed their cover of 'Covered In Chrome' that the crowd hit the roof! Covers of homegrown bands go down a treat at any Australian festival and NORTHEAST PARTY HOUSE ripped it up for this one!

TODD TERJE 'Delorean Dynamite'

I had been waiting years for the futuristic disco master TODD TERJE to bring his live show to Australia. I witnessed a DJ set at Harbourlife in 2012 but I was craving a show made up purely of his own productions. This genius (I mean that in every sense of the word) had me on another planet for a little over an hour as my ears took in the sounds of 'Snooze 4 Love', 'Inspector Norse', 'Eurodans' and a personal favourite of mine known as 'Delorean Dynamite'. TERJE was without a doubt the highlight of my Falls experience this time around. Hopefully he'll be back soon!

Honourable Mentions:

DZ DEATHRAYS 'Sandstorm' (DARUDE Cover)

BLUEJUICE 'Vitriol'

THE PRESETS 'I Go Hard, I Go Home'

JAMIE XX - His entire DJ Set

RETIREE 'Rain' (CLIENT LIAISON Remix)
