Live Review: Lipelis shares some of his favourite dance tunes in the lead up to Dark Mofo

Russian producer LIPELIS has shared with us some of his favourite dancefloor tunes, in wake of his performance at the upcoming Dark Mofo Festival.

Coming from a non-remarkable town within the large land mass of Russia, Lipelis moved to Moscow to find other folks who also like disco tunes. Over a decade later, Lipelis spins raw house beats and incorporates everything from AOR slow jams to acid techno, Turkish rock to French boogie, and electro to deep house... if it's beautiful, it's there!

The Red Bull Music Academy is making a return journey to Hobart as part of the Dark Mofo festival, with the two cultural icons reuniting across two weekends to present an industrial-scale, transcendental warehouse rave titled Transliminal.  Engineered for dancers to escape and let go, and programmed by RBMA, the lineup features the likes of DJ Harvey, Legowelt, Lipelis, András, Juliana Huxtable, Maurice Fulton, J’Nett, and many more.

We wanted to get to know Lipelis better, so we got acquainted over this playlist with some of his most loved tracks. Diverse and extraordinarily knowledgeable, this Soundcloud Wrap shows just how varied and unique this lad’s taste is, and gives us a sneak peak of what we can expect from him at Dark Mofo.

MORAL KIOSK - OT

This is a tune two good friends of mine (that I also play in a band with) made, as sort of a fun side-project reminiscent of 90s Russian pop. Lyrics were taken from the famous Russian poet, Mandelshtam, which adds another twist.

AL MASSIREEN - SAH

Incredible jazz-funk song from Egypt previously released on tapes only and unearthed by the Habibi Funk label.

SHARIF LAFFREY - ALWAYS

Quite a crazy dance track that I luckily got before its official release. It might not be the one you play every time but more special, and if you play it in the right moment it just explodes!

FUTUROLOGISCHER CONGRESS - KÖRPERWÄRME (Misha Geleyn Edit)

Great edit by the guy who used to run a radio station here in Moscow, who is now more concentrated on DJing and throwing parties with his partner at the Strelka, one of the best local venues. Love the combo of guitar, live drums and a 303 on this one.

SCOTT GROOVES - FINISHED

One of my favourite groovy deeper tracks for the dancefloor. It sounds really simple but that just makes it better. The second part kicks in as a nice surprise.

ARSENII - XTC SUITE (PT.1)

Beautiful ambient piece by my good friend and one of the best warm-up DJs I know, Arsenii. Hoping he's gonna manage to make a whole record someday finally.

DAVID PIATTO "LOST CASSETTE DEMO" #10

This is a demo track by Italian composer and member of N.O.I.A. band, Davide Piatto. There's some more cool stuff on that tape too.

ALPHONSE - GIANT AM (DJ Normal 4 VibemixX)

One of the the tracks that just sneaked into my sets like a ninja, wasn't expecting to play it that much but just can't resist since the first time I did.

OLEFONKEN - COUSTEAU

This track makes me feel that Norwegian Disco tradition is still alive, also Olefonken is one of the few people that manage to have that Metro Area vibe in his tracks, which is so lovely.

ROY OF THE RAVERS - EMOTINIUM

Acid House had its comeback these last few years and I think this is one of the rare examples of taking a genre somewhere further than just 303 knobs tweaking. Really musical and highly emotional, hence the name.

Transliminal will be presented on two weekends from 9th-17th June at Hobart City Hall as part of the Dark Mofo Festival, with strictly limited tickets available at the door. See here for full line-up and event information.
