Discover Leftenent with bonafide new release, ‘We Can Do Better’
Each week, we select one artist to feature as our Spotlight Artist, and this week we’ve chosen LEFTENENT.
LEFTENENT is a new project from Sydney-based musical wonder woman Antonia Gauci, and she’s just shared with us her latest track, ‘We Can Do Better’. We’re making a very warm welcome to this new solo project, which is irrefutably pretty damn unique.
Antonia Gauci is the wearer of multiple musical hats and has an impressive career as a revered studio engineer, beginning as an in-house producer/engineer at Sydney’s iconic Studios 301. During her time there, Gauci worked with producers and artists such as Ryan Lewis (including on the latest release from Kesha), Alison Wonderland, and Vallis Alps.
As a musician, Antonia Gauci is part of the Italo-Disco supergroup GAUCI and plays keys in Las Vagueness and Bus Vipers. She procreated Leftenent last year out of late night experimentation, determination and encouragement from some of the kindest souls in Sydney’s music scene, and is now making her own glistening contribution to the electronic music enclave.
Officially Leftenent’s second single offering, ‘We Can Do Better’ is submerged in complex sonic textures and musical connotations, showcasing Gauci’s assiduous flair for songwriting and production. This latest release highlights Gauci’s eloquent vocals as they glide over suspended synths, dampened piano and transmuted samples, adroitly swimming with the intimacy of St. Vincent and the restraint of James Blake.
The song has a down to earth inspiration behind it, as Gauci explains:
“‘We Can Do Better’ is the reveal of the personal, unnecessary and occasionally destructive attachment I have with my phone and social media. It’s an observation of my surroundings, something I feel people can relate to.”
‘We Can Do Better’ is a slow listen at first, but it will assuredly grow on you and unfurl more stunning sonic detail with every play. This is definitely one to ponder on!
