Live Review: PREMIERE: Various Asses heats up Time For Dreams' 'Newscene' in new remix

24 August 2017 | 9:59 am | Lloyd Crackett

Various Asses lend their experimental trap stylings to Time For Dreams' 'Newscene' ahead of their album launch at The Tote on September 1st

TIME FOR DREAMS and VARIOUS ASSES may not only be a mouthful of a sentence but also a startling coming together. Both known for quite their own unique styles of music, it's a wonder how the two came together. Yet, so is the way of the world and Various Asses have lent their more upbeat and experimental touch to Time For Dreams' 'Newscene'.

Cutting it down from its original over-6-minute time frame, Various Asses have taken a soundscape and turned it into something bouncier and more fully realised. With her signature trap elements weaving in and out of the heavy textural drones of the original, it becomes a track belonging to a bigger and more visibly excited room. Pulsing bass is broken up with intermittent tinkering synths and modified vocal loops to still maintain that texture from Time For Dreams, but in a harder, more condensed way.

Various Asses doesn't completely demolish the track, but more so splices it in ways in which their music plays out. It's not a remix done in reckless abandon; it's strong in its restraint and careful moderation of what goes in where. In its short under 2 minutes run, it's intentionally busy as it introduces and removes elements quickly without being jarring. Various Asses' work is always exciting and even on a remix of an artist whose music is based in textual soundscapes, she once again puts her expert skills to the test to ultimately create something completely full of life once more.
