DIY culture with TEEF Records on Talking Heads for Purple Sneakers Radio

11 August 2017 | 1:27 pm | Hannah Galvin

For this week's instalment of Talking Heads for Purple Sneakers on FBi Radio, we focus on Sydney / Melbourne based label TEEF Records.

If electronic music were a series of whimsical collages, TEEF RECORDS  would most definitely be its dutiful scrapbook.

A record label founded in 2015 by The Sound DoctrineTriple J Unearthed's Tommy Faith (who has since recruited former Purple Sneakers editor / all round legend Tom Hutchins), TEEF Records operates as a platform for creatives to further develop their artistic careers.

Ringing true to DIY culture, TEEF is completely entirely 100% independent. Not once will you find its name hoisted up by an acting major label backbone, nor will you stumble across a distribution deal. It is simply its own creative entity, allowing a generous imaginative outlet for their artists to breathe and exist in.

If TEEF artists were to lay on a rainbow wheel, they'd definitely identify with the cooler hues of the colourful spectrum. Nestled within the purples, blues and greys, the energy from the emotive sonic language encourages the isolated listener to pack up and vacate to the chill of the alps. Exotic and scenic, TEEF Records achieve outstanding results in exposing such innovative talent.

Boasting a roster that includes AnatoleArthur Wimble, Eilish Gilligan, ExhibitionistLonelyspeck and Yon Yonson, the non-for-profit hub have also began releasing a compilation series. Titled Imperium in Imperio, it translates to "Empire Within An Empire", and collects unheard and unreleased tracks which would otherwise never see the light of day. Released in conjunction with OXFAM Australia, all proceeds from the "Name Your Price" download goes straight to the allocated fund in which the issue chooses. With two instalments residing in the troposphere, expect the next compilation to drop before the close of the year.

Engaged, switched on and passionate about the work they immerse themselves in, TEEF Records are monumental to our local music paradigm. Check out their latest release by Anatole as he debuts his first full-length record with 'Like Deep Water' - a stunning collaborative endeavour with Nordic musician Olafur Arnalds.

Stay up to date with TEEF Records here.

Catch Purple Sneakers on FBi Radio every Saturday from 5-6pm on 94.5FM (if you’re in Sydney), on DAB, and streaming online here.
