Live Review: Get busy thinking 'bout 'Boys' and bass on Droeloe's Charli XCX remix

29 September 2017 | 8:34 am | Lloyd Crackett

If you like your 'Boys' with a side of bass, look no further than Droeloe's Charli XCX remix that takes her mellow bop to a bass attack

CHARLI XCX’s ‘Boys’ is a stellar track, from it’s cute as fuck video clip, adorable lyrics and all round general good time vibes. It’s one of the few Charli XCX tracks to break on to the harshly female popstar-judgey Triple J, even though she’s put out left of centre pop alongside her bank-breakers for years. ‘Boys’ is also one of her more mellow bops yet with the catchy hook, pretty blips and bleeps, and it was only a matter of time before the remixes started pouring in. DROELOE, bass masters from the Netherlands, have delivered one fine remix, expanding on the absolute exuberance of being busy thinking about boys.

A mark of a good remix is usually whether or not the original song is recognisable, if it has been expanded and re-imagined rather than clipped up as samples or pushed to the side for a drop. DROELOE have very neatly kept the original structure of the song intact and filled out the mellow beats. Percussion and bass underpin the track and pitched up vocals aid as it gathers speed to the drop that encompasses the original production. It’s essentially rejigging the track for bigger rooms, for larger crowds and looser nights. Where Charli’s original was rolling around on your bed, reminiscing about those sweet Man Crush Mondays, Droeloe’s interpretation is for 1am- where being busy thinking about boys comes with considering if they go well with brunch. For the bass approach to boys, Droeloe’s remix is for you or really anyone who just loves some euphoric bass.

Droeloe are fresh off their Asia tour after releasing their A Moment In Time EP through bitbird, they’ll also be supporting San Holo as he tours across Australia. Don’t miss out on their bass-y good times.
