Bliss out to ‘Freda’s Jam’ from James i.V

JAMES I.V takes us on a journey of epic proportions on his new track, ‘Freda’s Jam’, part of a new Soothsayer compilation curated by Melbourne’s CC:DISCO!. Its constantly shifting beats and textures unfold over an incredibly exciting seven minutes. With its silvery sounds and ambient shimmers, it’ll have ripples running through your body from the get go.

The track was written last year for a live set at Freda’s Bar, one of Sydney’s most loved venues. It uses a variety of 80s and 90s signifiers to time-travel through the decades. Seeking that sweet spot between house and disco, James i.V interweaves Balearic beats, woozy synths and disco basslines. Its shimmering synths converge, transporting you to a cosmic place outside of time and space.

Subtle swirls create a diffuse, ambient feel, sweaty despite that Balearic chill. These seem to build towards a climax that never really comes. Instead, the music circles around in the same place, subtly evolving. There are some chime effects around the 2:50 mark that elevate the music wonderfully, creating a nice melody you can latch onto for a few short but precious seconds. The music is both healing and invigorating.

‘Freda’s Jam’ is a propulsive club track too, peppered with more energetic sounds throughout. Bongos, zaps and some minimalist drums really bring this track together nicely. All in all, it’s super chill but bouncy enough to get you moving.

If this is any indication of what the new Soothsayer compilation has to offer, then we’re definitely in for a treat. First Light: Volume 2 is out in Feb 2018, so keep an eye out for it – it’ll be worth the wait!
