Live Review: Miss Blanks calls out all her 'Haters' in new music video

11 January 2018 | 8:00 am | Camilla Patini

Badass rising star Miss Blanks fires a warning shot to those against her in her brand new video for 'Haters' featuring Aywin.

Badass MISS BLANKS boasts about her rap status in new single, 'Haters’, calling herself a “Super Saiyan rap killer.” Her in-your-face lyrics send out a clear message to her detractors and critics that, when it comes to business with her, Miss Blanks takes no prisoners. Rapping over a quick beat and collaborating with fellow Brisbane emcee, AYWIN, she fires warning shot after warning shot. If you hadn’t already guessed, this song is a screw you to all the haters and “the bad people out there that are trying to bring you/others down,” as Blanks explains. Off her recently released EP, Diary of a Thotaholic, 'Haters' is clever, catchy and quick-witted, and is completely infused with Blanks' now staple take-no-shit-attitude.

Brisbane-based Blanks has established herself as a powerhouse in the local rap scene. She has worked internationally too, with legendary Queens rap trio SALT-N-PEPA and has been recognised by none other than American duo YING YANG TWINS (best known for their collab with LIL JON on famous club track ‘Get Low’). Having clocked just one year in the music game at the end of 2017, she's quickly become an absolute force, playing festivals around the country, supporting the likes of Little Simz and accruing a very loyal fan base.

‘Haters’ now comes with a video directed by AISLINN LOWE. It features Blanks and her clique cruising the streets in a top down convertible, with both Blanks and Aywin delivering blazing verses to the camera while snapping mugshots of punks giving her attitude throughout the dingy, dark corners of Sydney’s inner west. The way Blanks and Aywin set these mugshots alight made me think of Regina George and her gang of girls in Mean Girls’ infamous Burn Book, used to start stories, rumours and gossip about girls at their school, except here it's flipped on its head. It's these pop culture nods that make this video so damn appealing.

The music video’s opening shots, slow-mo fades-to-black that set the scene like any good rap music video, brilliantly reveal its cast of characters and various lurid locations. With ‘Haters’ you’re hooked from the first twangy loop and cascading synth right up until the final bar, a fizzled out note which hopefully lays Blanks’ haters to rest once and for all.

Blanks’ presence in the Australian rap scene is becoming harder and harder to ignore; it can only be up from here. And as she herself says, “While 2017 was cute, 2018 is all about making it my bitch.” Twist the volume dial clockwise, and catch her on her quickly selling out tour, kicking off this weekend!
