Get to Know: Genesis Owusu

16 February 2018 | 11:12 am | Staff Writer

We get to know rising star, Genesis Owusu, who is currently on tour along the East Coast warming up for what will be his biggest year yet.

Ghanian born, Canberra based GENESIS OWUSU has had an exciting few months. From dropping 'Sideways' to critical and listener acclaim and lots of triple J love, to most recently signing with NICHE agency, he's seriously on the rise.

Currently on tour with one show already under his belt in Brisbane, the young rapper is doing the rounds to warm up for what is sure to be his biggest year yet. We didn't name him as one of our Artists to Watch in 2018 for nothing! Representing the current wave of fresh air in the Australian hip-hop scene, Owusu clearly has a lot more where 'Sideways' came from, and while the track does represent a turning point in his journey so far from when he was named a finalist in triple J's unearthed High in 2015, we still get the feeling he's really only just getting started.

Hitting Melbourne tonight and Sydney tomorrow, we got to know the rising star before he well and truly blows up. Check it below!

Who are you?

Local Goon, lover boy, semi-professional prophet

How did Genesis Owusu come to be?

Genesis Owusu came to be through two wonderful parents who love me to this day.

What are we talking, vibes-wise?

Just that – vibes, I suppose. Vibes that may or may not transcend genre. I’m a hip hop artist that might not always make hip hop music. Catch me on my country-metal fusion, ya dig.

Tell us a bit about your new single, Sideways?

Sideways is a homage to my Ghanaian foundations, which also shoots the sound to 2030, you know. Afrofuturism. It should’ve been on the Black Panther soundtrack. Someone get me Kendrick’s number.

You’re currently on an East Coast tour - how have the shows been so far?

So far I’ve just done the Brisbane show and that was wild. It was a really cool show, but the crazy part was that I had no idea that Laneway Festival in Brisbane was the next day, so a bunch of the Laneway artists just randomly happened upon my show. Mac Demarco, Moses Sumney and The Free Nationals (Anderson .Paak’s band) all showed up. They said they really liked it, so hey, if my show is good enough for them, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, make sure to come through.

It’s exciting times for you lately. We named you an Artist to Watch for 2018 and since then you’ve featured on the new Dro Carey song and just signed to Niche Productions. Congratulations! What else can we expect from you moving forward?

Thank you. Don’t expect anything from me though. I’m just going to give you what I give you and you can do with it what you will. Expect to see my face more. Or at least that picture of half my face that everyone keeps using.

Where can we hear more of your work?

My birthplace, the internet.
