Bona fide rockers since 2014 and engineers of Japanese-influenced Western Punk, KERO KERO BONITO have issued their first release of the new year. TOTEP is one of the most original sounding EPs you are likely to hear with originality being the key ingredient to its success, and is an eclectic mix of video-game inspired, electronic-dance, punk-rock tracks. It falls into an undefined category that experiments with the structures surrounding its genres while bringing with it a unique and exciting mix that proves its modernity.

Located somewhere between dreamy-pop and punk, the four songs that make up the EP’s tracklist move hazily through grungy guitar, sweetly sung lyrics and dedicated percussion. The track that really stands out on the EP, however, is ‘You Know How It Is’ which shows similarities to songs played over the rolling credits of a popular anime series and is the most upbeat song out of the four. Through its use of crashing drums and guitar solos, but in contrast to the singer’s sugary Japanese-style vocals, it is a confusing though catchy pop-punk fusion that breaks the soft-atmosphere made by the other 3 tracks.

Kero Kero Bonito is made up of members Sarah Midori Perry, Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled and originate from the great land of England however, due to Perry’s Japanese heritage, find inspiration from non-Western influences. They are a great example of how crossing genres can still be congruent with listener’s music tastes while also providing a platform in which experimentation is accepted and widely liked. And this is the kind of transformative talent is what will see the band last in the years to come.
