Live Review: Dugong Jr's 'Voyager' ft. Ruby Chase is layered electronica goodness

29 May 2018 | 8:41 am | Max Lewis

Melbourne producer Dugong Jr and Ruby Chase have teamed up on 'Voyager', a short but sweet electronica cut of booming bass and soaring vocals.

If you combine the multi-layered bass magic of Melbourne producer DUGONG JR with the soulful and soaring vocals of RUBY CHASE, you've got something special on your hands - and that's exactly what they've delivered and then some with 'Voyager'.

Dugong Jr has been prolific in his craft for three odd years now, honing his skills on last year's White Heart EP, with his oeuvre densely packed with synth heavy bass music that leaves plenty of room for a myriad of vocal talent while also letting him work his own magic. Ruby Chase made a name for herself in no time at all on her collab with Bad Royale's 'Blue Sky Action', quickly followed with her solo debut, 'Snake Charmer'.  His first original track in a year, 'Voyager' showcases the talents of both Dugong and Chase while proving itself to be an absolute banger in its own right.

With some slow-motion vocal samples and soft piano, the scene is set and is quickly enhanced with Ruby Chase's vocals stealing the show. When the beat drops just shy of a minute, we see Dugong at his best: tightly crafted and crisp percussion pounds over warm synth melodies and Ruby's vocals filling up the high end nicely. At just under three minutes, the track is short and definitely prioritises quality over quantity; with not much structural progression to speak of, it instead lets the listener luxuriate in layers of synths and vocals, grounded by the immense low end.

Dugong Jr is at his best when he's crafting dense bass-heavy magic that takes you on a journey, and as the name implies 'Voyager' certainly does that. Add one of Ruby Chase's best performances yet and you've got the perfect track to whack on when you need a pick-me-up.
