San Mei lets us in on her top five one hit wonders

8 May 2018 | 5:54 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

Back in 2017, SAN MEI shared her debut EP in the form of Necessary. Since then, we've been anticipating what's to come from the Gold Coast based musician, and what she's delivered has absolutely not disappointed.

'Wonder' is the name of her newest single, and if psych-drenched guitars, power-pop vocals and a real knack for drawing off her 90's influences isn't enough, then take a listen for yourself below.

What's most overt about this single from the first listen is its ability to really pull you in with its fuzzy hooks and initial stance, but the song transforms as it progresses, serving up dreamy, echoey vocals and juxtaposing their tentative assurance with pristine, classic rock guitars. Her style of creating sounds is other worldly, and 'Wonder' is evidence of that.

In celebration of her new single, we asked San Mei to let us in on her top five one hit wonders.

Butterfly by Crazy Town

This song is ridiculous and perfect and I will always love it. That guitar hook, the moment in the music video where the lead singer's star shoulder tattoos spin off up into the trees, the lyric "Fierce nipple pierce, you got me sprung with your tongue ring"... what's not to love.

Lovefool by The Cardigans

This is song is amazing. The melodies are perfect and I think it's timeless. For some reason it makes me want to be drinking a cocktail on a tropical island somewhere.

Sway by Bic Runga

This song is so beautiful with its quintessential 90s melodies and her flawless voice. It transports me right back to sweet childhood times.

Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground

I love this sultry little number. It's so low key and laid back but catchy as hell. It also has that classic pub cover appeal which I'm totally into.

Even When I'm Sleeping by Leonardo's Bride

This is the perfect 90s love ballad and I love that her raspy vocals kinda rough it up around the edges a little. And being an Aussie band, of course it makes me proud *single tear
