Live Review: Say Lou Lou are as timeless as ever with the sparkling 'Ana'

13 June 2018 | 8:46 am | Jackson Langford

'Ana' is a sonic gem that shines bright among the dirt, and Say Lou Lou have ensured that its sparkle, as well as their own, lasts as long as possible.

SAY LOU LOU are one of those acts that come along once in a blue moon. Their stunning, illustrious approach to orchestral pop rivals that of Lana Del Rey, yet they shroud it in just enough ominousness and allure to make a sound that's all their own. After the success of their 2015 debut, Say Lou Lou are back with their follow-up album Immortelle, and lead single 'Ana' is truly something you simply need to hear.

'Ana' is one of those rare diamonds of a song that can be utilised in many different ways. Its 90's triphop fuzz over the gorgeous vocals - think All Saints - makes it ooze sensuality, yet the orchestral melody and blazing guitar riffs that drench the second half set it up perfectly for any major blockbuster soundtrack. The song drips in opulence and is cloaked in the jewels of Hollywood, but is also drenched in the gritty underworld of the 90's before getting a fresh sounding, 2018 friendly makeover. Say Lou Lou have almost encompassed several decades' worth of music in five minutes, and made it sound simple, clear and beautiful.

'Ana' is a sonic gem that shines bright among the dirt, and Say Lou Lou have ensured that its sparkle, as well as their own, lasts as long as possible. It's a timeless song, reminiscent of so many eras, yet feels refreshingly new. It's illustrious, it's opulent, and you'll be all the more richer for having listened to it.
