Live Review: Kinder drop absolutely stellar debut single 'What You're Like'

13 July 2018 | 9:35 am | Jackson Langford

'What You're Like' is the perfect song for Kinder to make their debut with because it's the type of refreshing wave the industry was craving for so long.

There's no feeling quite like when an artist you love blindsides you with a song. It's that jaw-dropping, sit-back moment when you finish the song and realise that an artist has done the direct antithesis of what you expected them to do. Australian audiences have grown to love Sydney-based sister duo KINDER from their electrifying, booming DJ sets at every festival under the sun, but now they're making their shiny debut as artists in their own right with their first ever single, 'What You're Like', and they've taken a completely unexpected direction - and we're very much on board.

So much of what goes on in Australian dance music sits at two ends of a spectrum - stadium-ready bangers that explode at every given second on one end, and subdued, bass-heavy gems on the other. Not only does 'What You're Like' fit comfortably in between the two - it carves a lane all of its own. From the subtle and aloof vocal delivery to the reggaeton/house-fused beat that keeps the song afloat, you can try and cast your mind to compare to other Aussie songs you hear on the radio that sound similar - and you'll come up short every time.

It's a sun-drenched, flowing floor-filler but holds back just enough. It thumps where it needs to, and breezes elsewhere. 'What You're Like' is the perfect song for Kinder to make their debut with because it's the type of refreshing wave that the industry was craving for so long. It's new, it's an earworm, and, as said before, it's proof Kinder have carved out their own lane. And with no one to match them - it's full speed ahead.
