Pink Matter take us through Brisbane's hidden gems

29 August 2018 | 10:07 am | Emma Jones

If you're one of the thousands set to descend on Brisbane next week for BIGSOUND, you may want a little help from some locals of the hidden gems in the city. With quite a few Brisbane bands filling out this year's line up, it's proof of Brisbane's rapidly evolving and diversifying scene, and one particularly exciting band to emerge from this scene is PINK MATTER. Having worked tirelessly over the last two years honing their sound and refining their craft, the four piece have developed an identity as a jazz-infused, neo-soul, pop styling act like no other.

From their debut single, 'Quicksand', to their most recent release in their Human Error EP, the band continue to shine so bright as a fresh injection of confident individuality, immense skill and sheer talent into a thriving scene, and now they're ready to take on the rest of the world.

Before they head into BIGSOUND, we asked the band to give us the scoop on their favourite hidden gems throughout Brisbane. Check it all out below and catch them at the festival next week!

Lil J’s Vintage/ The Culprit Club

This little store has only just opened up in the notorious Winn Lane in Fortitude Valley. Owned by two boss woman, this store offers really awesome street wear, Ironlak supplies and local zines. The space is occupied by Lil J’s Vintage jackets and streetwear and The Culprit Club’s infamous merch. Be sure to check it out!

CONTRA

Hidden in plain sight, CONTRA is Brisbane City’s hidden gem for high end streetwear, accessories and the odd magazine or photobook. Tucked away in Adelaide St - central in the CBD - you’ll find amazing fashion from the likes of Etudes, CMMN Sweden, Maison Kitsune and publications such as 032c, Brick Magazine and ACCLAIM.

Barbara

This bar is one of our go-to pre/post gig bars to go to in Brisbane. They always have the best music and it brings such a great atmosphere. Every Tuesday they hold a really cool night called “Jazz is Dead” which showcases local Brisbane jazz musicians improvising talents, this is a favourite night of ours that you’ll most likely catch at least one of us at!

Nom Nom (Warner St)

Nom Nom is a little Korean food wonderland! We’ve been here for some pre gig energy and really enjoyed the creative menu and the variety they offer.

The Foundry

This is by far our favourite bar in Brisbane. The vibes and the music is so great and we’ve been fortune to play here many many times. The staff are outstanding (shoutouts to our boy Alby) and always so lovely. There’s always great local bands playing and hilarious trivia nights and great disco music.
