Live Review: PREMIERE: AUSTEN drops new video for 'Too High To Cry'

23 August 2018 | 10:03 am | Emma Jones

An exciting development from a rapidly evolving artist, AUSTEN proves she's one to keep an eye on with the release of new visuals for 'Too High To Cry'

A few months ago, Brisbane's AUSTEN delivered her strongest single yet with 'Too High To Cry'. A powerful slice of dark pop coupled with soaring vocals and an emotional message, it's demonstrative of her rapid evolution from bedroom pop darling to fully-fledged future superstar, asserting herself in the ever-changing and exciting pop landscape in Australia. Today, she's doubling down on this with the release of some accompanying visuals, putting everyone who didn't have her on their radar on notice.

Teaming up with Jaen Collective, the visuals for 'Too High To Cry' split the meanings of the song in two, showing how each could play out. Whether being "high" means numbing yourself to the point when you can't care anymore, or being too high and ecstatic that you're distracted from your problems altogether, the video juxtaposes these two scenarios with AUSTEN rightly taking centre-stage in each along with the running theme that one choice can change your reality.

“I wanted the video to have vulnerable and down to earth moments alongside the head-rush moments that were really high and fun," AUSTEN said of the clip. Drenched in red hues, the visuals evoke feelings of passion but also anger or war as the duality of what choice she could've made is highlighted.

A thoughtful, considered and perfectly executed representation of her finest work to date, AUSTEN is making some seriously impressive moves at the moment and with a BIGSOUND set just around the corner next month, there's no stopping her.
