Live Review: Yollks puts her favourite female techno producers to the front on her guest mix

11 September 2018 | 9:46 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Melbourne based musician and producer Elle Tayla makes music under the moniker YOLLKS. She's got a couple of tracks under her belt, a growing passion for DJing house parties and club nights across Melbourne and a penchant for fusing her emotive vocals with UK garage and house music. It’s great production meets innovative story-telling.

She made her first crack onto the scene in 2016 with her debut single ‘Return to Sender’, a hard-hitting slow burner that commands your attention throughout the track's entirety. It later went on to feature on Synth Babe Records’ Vol. 1 compilation. The single has also provided the opportunity for her to support artists like Confidence Man, Batts, Huntly, Eilish Gilligan, and more.

Around three months ago, she released her third single, 'Charms'. There's a marked difference between this one and her previous single, 'Substance'. What's most apparent is the way she's approached the production on the single. There's that same raw energy only her vocals could bring to her singles, but the production on this is huge.

There's layers upon layers of sound design here. It is definitely her most complex and thought provoking release to date, and it's so exciting to see which direction she's headed in with each release.

Of the single which we premiered back in May, we said that it was "A dance anthem for anyone who has ever felt immobile or incapable of moving forward, there is nothing more certain than Yollks is well and truly moving with this evolution, and she’s only heading upwards."

She's set to release a clip to accompany the single very soon, so to celebrate, we got her to jump on the guest mix. The mix aired last Saturday on our radio show on FBi Radio, but we've got all of the action here to catch you up.

She curated this four-track mix featuring singles from some of her favourite female techno producers, and I've gotta say, it's a massive journey from start to finish.
