Live Review: Hood Joplin bares her hip-hop influences in this fast-paced guest mix

If there's one thing we love covering here at Purple Sneakers, it's emerging club music. When considering who to look to for versatile guest mixes this month, it was an easy pick to approach Canada's HOOD JOPLIN.

With a slew of hip hop-inspired footwork releases under her belt, an opening slot for arguably one of the most influential hip-hop inspired producers, Flying Lotus, all paired with an aesthetic to match, there's proof in the pudding that she's bringing a totally new spin on the genre to the table.

In 2017, she released her second EP, Hazard. The EP explored the total spectrum of her sound, opening with a deep, ambient cut juxtaposed with jarring, industrial sirens titled 'Keys'. 'EQ' bares its trap influences with reverb-ed out vocals and a driving hi-hat whilst 'Caution' and 'U' use bass at its heaviest.

Her approach to footwork is non-conforming in the best way possible, and where the genre typically uses hip-hop as its main influence, I think she does the opposite and uses electronic music as its starting point.

Her 'Fill-In' mix series explores her interest in hip-hop whilst also showcasing her DJ finesse.

She's got a whole bunch of new music in the works, including a couple of tracks that she's craftily sewn into her guest mix. The mix embodies all of the sounds and ideas she's bared thus far - blending elements of footwork, trap, hip-hop and everything in between to create a unique amalgamation of personality, gusto and style.

There's two sides to Hood Joplin - an electronic mastermind with a firm grip on a fairly new genre. She understands completely how her sound fits within the genre, and I think that's the beauty of it. On the flipside, she's heavily into hip-hop and has used this mix to explore that.
