‘The Comments’ is the new slow jam from Melbourne’s wonderful Yeo, a musician who has become quite well known for his genre-bending creations. It’s his first release for 2018 and serves as the first taste of a new EP due out next year. With two gorgeous albums under his belt already and collabs with amazing artists like Hermitude, Asta, Fractures, Kira Puru and Charlie Lim, this is beyond exciting news.

As the title suggests, ‘The Comments’ is all about the futility of online discussion and takes aim at those using the internet to hide behind to be as insensitive, offensive, rude or just plain incorrect as they please without (seemingly) consequences. Lyrics touch on issues such as marriage inequality and insecurities about the future, making for a seriously thought provoking track. Yeo’s emotive and honest vocals translate these themes with maximum effect and his minimalistic production style really helps to amplify this aspect of the song.

Musically, Yeo has managed to create a sort of neo-R’n’B sound with ‘The Comments’ by blending old-school time signatures and structuring with fresh aural texturing. It was recorded in the artist's own studio shed and mixed and mastered by Andrei Maberley and Adam Dempsey respectively. It’s definitely on the slower end of the spectrum for Yeo, but nonetheless is an exciting indication of what’s to come. Gorgeous, sensitive and thought provoking, ‘The Comments’ is a track that leaves a lot of Yeo’s personal beliefs laid bare- a move that is daring but necessary for any great songwriter.
