PREMIERE: Squaring Circles’ ‘Anergyne’ is brought to life in synesthetic new clip

2018’s been a massive year for Melbourne duo SQUARING CIRCLES. They put out their first run of singles together as the year’s gone by, and to close this year out with a bang, they’ve today dropped their debut EP Anergyne.

The EP itself is a sonic melting pot of psychedelia, alt rock and slow-building electronica. You’re probably looking at those three identities and wondering what that might even sound like, but trust me when I say this: get stuck in. All three tracks featured on the EP favour different aspects of these genres and the fusion of these three sounds in particular creates something entirely unexplored.

The EP also features two remixes: a club-heavy take on ‘Anergyne’ by Adonidia and an ambient rework of ‘Movement’ from Nico Niquo.

Today here at Purple Sneakers, we’re premiering the clip for the title track of the EP!

‘Anergyne’ is by far the ‘electronic’ track of the EP, swapping out actual kit sounds for quantised pad beats, and it’s something really special. There’s a light bongo that drives this one forward, but it’s the psychedelia infused into this one that deepens its effect. This one is best listened to loud, and I think you’ll find that with each listen, something new will find its way to the fore of the track and captivate you.

The clip is a synesthetic dream, the cartoon visual breathing in and out as the track chugs forward. I don’t have synesthesia in the slightest so I couldn’t tell you how accurate this is, but I imagine that this visual is what that particular sensation would feel like.

Produced and edited by Brendan Anderson and Shannon Madden, the clip is a celebration of the otherworldness of the instrumental. It’s complimentary in the best way possible.

Squaring Circles are currently putting together a live show, but for now, give the EP a bump.
