Mallrat & Basenji bring out the best in each other on ‘Nobody’s Home’
In one of the most wholesome collabs of the century, MALLRAT and BASENJI have just dropped their joint single ‘Nobody’s Home’. The track’s release comes off the announcement of another (quickly selling out) national tour for the vocalist, who’s bringing KOTA BANKS, NYNE and of course Basenji along for the ride too. Matching one’s effortlessly thoughtful lyricism with the other’s pop-meets-dreamy-club production, together on their new single the duo channel a rose tinted melancholy; all at once sad and bright.
Basenji and Mallrat are two artists that have a solid sense of self about them, and their unique approaches to pop songwriting work perfectly together on ‘Nobody’s Home’. A wistful chord progression played by sharp bells and fuzzy pan flutes set the scene for a woozy lovestruck ballad. Sparse composition leaves room the vocals but also enhances their romantic message.
The track’s music video, directed by Ariel Fisher, feels as abstract and emotive as Basenji and Mallrat‘s worlds combined. Mallrat falls through her garden like Alice into Wonderland, lost in a home decked out in lush fabrics and surrounded by dancers in washed out suit sets. Striking images of dense red sunsets, half sunken dinner tables, dancers obscured by frosted glass and shutter blinds in the middle of hallways feel otherworldly and hyper real.
That solid sense of self in their creativity brings a warmth and familiarity to ‘Nobody’s Home’, and together Mallrat and Basenji have mastered the sad bop.
Featuring plenty of all ages shows, a rag tag team of Aus-pop boundary pushers and Mallrat herself, her Nobody’s Home Tour is kicking off at the end of March. With multiple shows selling out due to high demand you better get in quick.
