Get down to some of our favourite acts at UP DOWN Festival

5 February 2019 | 2:56 pm | Caitlin Medcalf

The good people at THIS THAT are bringing a new festival to Newcastle's foreshore this March. The team are dedicated to pushing some of the best new music to the harbour city, and they're broadening their scope with this beat-heavy tropical mixer.

Already announced for the festival's debut lineup are the like of seminal electronica act The Bloody BeetrootsMajor Lazer's The Jillionaire, indie-dance wonder Adrian Lux and a bunch of talented Aussies including Nina Las VegasBasenjiCarmadaSet MoKota Banks & heaps more.

The two stage affair is set to be the perfect Sunday sesh, kicking off in the early arvo and going right into the night.

We're excited to get amongst the festival's debut and to see what all of the fuss is all about, so to tide us over, we've put together a list of acts we're pumped to see do their thing at the festival.

BASENJI

Sydney club kid Basenji's been quiet on the release front, but 2018 saw him have quite the year. He went on tour, released a bootleg package of reworks of artists like Robin S and Hudson Mohawke and quietly chipped away at some new releases, including one that's fresh off the producer's desk with Mallrat.

He's arguably one of the most exciting DJ's in Australia, bringing both high-energy and delicate production to the table, so there's no doubt that his appearance at UP DOWN will be nothing short of ecstatic.

KOTA BANKS

Armed with her debut mixtape PrizeKota Banks has been tearing it up across the country with her fiercely original crossover brand of pop-meets-club music. The Sydney based artist has been writing since she was a kid, so her signing to forward-thinking club label NLV Records comes as no surprise.

She's just recently wrapped up her Falls Festival tour which went down over the new year, and with a live show as engaging and an energy as inviting as hers, she's not one to miss.

LUEN

Sydney selector and producer LUEN's been kicking it in Aussie music for quite some time now, with a lot to show for it too. Over the years, she's been responsible for the now defunct Hand Games collective. She also co-runs Taxx with Genie, a space for the gals to showcase forward thinking music through compilations, put on parties, compile zines and more. And more recently, curates radio show, come record label, Beats Of No Nation alongside Dom Bird and Jad & The.

She's fierce behind the decks, mixing house and techno classics in with rare oddities she's discovered both online and offline.

NINA LAS VEGAS

The NLV Records boss is honestly a damn wizard when it comes to mixing and performing. Aside from running the label, NLV's spent her time since departing triple j working hard on her own high-energy brand of club music that's graced clubs and spaces all around the globe, as well as providing a platform for like-minded artists to grow together. She's been residing in the UK for the last couple of months whilst playing shows around the world.

She recently delivered a mammoth set for Mixmag's The Lab LA, which you can get acquainted with above.
