Live Review: PREMIERE: ZK king traps us in her 'typhoon'

7 March 2019 | 10:30 am | Caitlin Medcalf

With her OPENPALACES tape forthcoming, Melbourne producer/singer/songwriter ZK KING has given us a lil taste of what's to come with 'typhoon', an intimate peer into her creative process. The release is an experiential one, detailing female experiences of the body, most particularly how they're perceived.

The track from the onset is incredibly visceral; her way of songwriting is more than just storytelling through lyrics, but it's through building the atmosphere with light sonic textures that you can really feel. Her production choices on 'typhoon' are sparse and spacey with a light touch of hip-hop in the percussive line to drive the beat forward.

The beauty in this one is the way she's used her production skills and vocal prowess in tandem: the soaring harmonies programmed throughout this one are a testament to the keen eye she has for detail and the understanding she has of her style of producing.

'typhoon' is the first track in around a year from ZK king, but it sees a new way of thinking and an entirely new approach to creating than we've heard from her before.

OPENPALACES will be out March 21st digitally and on limited cassette through Healthy Tapes.
