Get to know A.GIRL & her top spots to hang in Western Sydney

‘2142’ is the postcode for the Sydney suburb of Granville, the place where Hinenui-Terangi Tairua AKA A.GIRL resides. It’s a suburb in Western Sydney with a really high immigrant population, so the demographic of the people in Granville is hugely diverse.

Produced and mixed by Taka Perry, ‘2142’ is a love song for her area.

“The song is about the area I was exposed to and the things I saw first-hand. As much as it represents 2142, it’s an anthem for all people from all areas that have been through the same” she says. Though her home is here, she also has a deep connection to her family’s Māori homeland of Te Hapua in New Zealand’s North Island.

‘2142’ sees her busting out her versatile vocal across a variety of styles in the track’s three minutes and 30 seconds. She radiates confidence within her singing voice and juxtaposes that with a sharp, heavy flow in the verses. The instrumental samples a recording of a young woman close to A.GIRL being arrested by police, which is an all too common scene there.

Western Sydney has some of the best, hidden gems tucked away in varying pockets of the area. A.GIRL has let us in on some of her favourite spots around town, and I’ve got to vouch for all of these choices. West is best! Take a read below.

El Jannah
El Jannah is the heart of Granville and I can vouch that they have the most amazing charcoal chicken and crispiest chips to scoff down, however, their show stopper is the garlic sauce! Some of the locals say it has a ‘special ingredient’ that keeps everyone coming back for more.

Parramatta River (Summer time)
Probably the coolest place to hang out with the fam, crew, your dog or even just by yourself. With park benches everywhere, it’s a perfect place to set up a BBQ or picnic close enough to watch the little kiddies swimming in the river. Also, for the big kids there’s plenty of rocks to jump off of into the river with some phat bombs.

Blacktown Drive-In Movies
This one if for all the cute couples out there looking for a place to watch all the hot new movie releases. Drive in, park up, set up and grab some snacks from the 60’s themed milkshake/snack bar inside. It’s probably the cutest place ever to buy food but just a hot tip, bring some snacks with you if you’re on a budget lol.

Broaster Chicken Merrylands
This is my personal fav and I actually never give this type of ‘top secret’ information out. What can I say, I’m very precious about my food, but for you guys, I’ll make an exception. In the heart of Merrylands, the quiet little Broaster Chicken has some of the nicest deep fried chicken I’ve ever tasted. The coleslaw is so creamy and goes perfectly with the chicken and gravy, making something that is pure magic. Trust me when I say you haven’t lived until you go there!

Butter Parramatta
Maybe after you’ve finished up at the lake, after a long day of swimming, you and the gang can head over to Butter Parramatta for a phat feed! Besides their chicken being flakey perfection, this is absolute heaven if you’re a sneakers head. Your chicken comes in a shoe box and there are plenty of display shoes to look at while eating. Sometimes when I drop in, I don’t know if customers are drooling over the food or the shoes lol. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention they always have killer music playing, good music always brings in the right people!

No idea where she’ll be in 10 years, but as long as she has a good record and a glass of white wine, she’ll be sweet.
