Live Review: REVIEW: SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS

25 January 2012 | 2:20 pm | Staff Writer

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS 'Ghostory' will be out in Feb. The album tells the tale of a girl named ‘Lafaye’ and the ghosts she encounters.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS are all set to release their third album Ghostory in February this year. Conceptually, the album tells the tale of a girl named Lafaye and the ghosts that she encounters in her life. Like their previous albums, Ghostory is dance-centric but has a heightened 80’s feel and sound to it (doesn’t everything right now?).

'Show me love' is the highlight of the album. It’s fucking sexy and takes a step back from the dance music genre. It sounds a little like something Tori Amos would have written in the 90’s… in a good way. As a whole, there are a lot of really beautiful little ideas and sounds on Ghostory that could have been explored in greater depth.

The beginning of 'Scavenger' is reminiscent of 80’s electro pop weirdoes Japan, but like most of the songs on this album, it quickly shifts into predictability mode. Predictability can be nice though - it’s comfortable and means that there are no awkward moments where you look like an idiot because you kept dancing when the song unexpectedly finished.
