Live Review: FLASHBACK: The Stone Roses 'Ten Storey Love Song'

28 March 2012 | 9:00 am | Hannah Story

We're going back into the early '90s to check out The Stone Roses. Yup, the perfect combination of psychedelia with alternative, delicious.

When I first took a listen to THE STONE ROSES I was absolutely certain they had to be a British band from the ‘60s. They fit perfectly within my idea of ‘60s psychedelia and boy, was I surprised when I found out they were actually from the ‘90s. Nonetheless, we appreciate them for their sitar-infused indie tunes.

Like New Order, The Stone Roses are considered part of the Madchester movement that emerged in Manchester in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. They infused alternative with psychedelic and dance music. An interesting concoction, but it works here.

This track, ‘Ten Storey Love Song’ from their 1994 sophomore release aptly named Second Coming is a perfect example of just what I’m speaking about. Except here The Stone Roses gets the I LOVE YOU SO MUCH message out in a much shorter space of time than the first song on the album, ‘Breaking Into Heaven’- 11 minutes of noise rock mixed with psych.  But this piece of garage has a very odd clip to accompany it. I’m not quite sure what’s happening. I think he’s going a little crazy what with all the love he has to give. Or maybe he’s on drugs. Seeing someone’s face melt isn’t exactly a sober person experience…

The Stone Roses split not long after this album was released. They’ve since reformed and announced a 2012 UK tour and 3rd album in the works. And even if they’re not in their prime anymore, they’re still so worth seeing.
