Live Review: FEATURED ARTIST: Pirates Alive

13 April 2012 | 6:30 pm | Staff Writer

Pirates Alive have been described as a cross between Nirvana and The Beach Boys. What do you think?

With a psychedelic, bleached grunge vibe and a live performance style that will have you going "Shit, these guys are going to be big,” band mates Michael, Jarryd, and Sam from PIRATES ALIVE are making waves.

Their sunshine jams make you want to stop whatever you’re doing (whether it be working, wallowing or wanking), pack up your gear and head down to the beach; maybe even quit your job and become a surf bum, just drink and groove and laze and sing along to ‘Shark Attack’ with a vengeance.

And with a repertoire of gigs alongside such personalites as Millions, Velociraptor, Dune Rats, and Goons of Doom to namedrop a few, the local Gold Coast band is showing no signs of slowing down. They even partied over at Big Day Out: one of the six local bands chosen to play the A-Stage out of the 118 who applied.

These guys have a stage presence that rivals many signed bands, and the raw talent to boot. Triple J deemed them a fusion of Nirvana and The Beach Boys. Having partied (unbeknownst to them I’m sure) in their general vicinity at gigs of theirs like local GC live music spot The Loft and a few other humble joints, I can safely second this comparison. I’m looking forward to the day I can say “I saw them with a tiny audience of 60 other pumped up kids, and fuck you, you have to go see them in this huge arena with millions of people” and be all wanky and shit.

So, to sum it all up in let’s say… 5 words: This. Band. Is. Fucking. Rad.
