Live Review: LISTEN: Dirty Projectors 'You Against the Larger World'

28 April 2012 | 12:00 pm | Staff Writer

Released exclusively for Record Store Day, 'You Against The Larger World' is stripped-back but enormously powerful and moving.

RECORD STORE DAY. This is what it's about! A celebration of music and the humble people who bring it to you. Literally bring it to you, sometimes. I mean, yeah, alright, 10,000 songs are much better carried around as mp3s than as records, but there's no denying that records are fucking magical: buying them, sitting in the car and peeling back the shrink-wrap, devouring the booklet of art, lyrics, and acknowledgements, realising that you don't have any way of listening to it, staring at the back of the disc in a futile attempt to figure out what it sounds like without actually listening to it, and then collapse at the wheel, sobbing from the pressure of past failures. Magical.

Anyway, here is a song that The Dirty Projectors released for Record Store Day. It features Spanish guitar and Dave Longstreth's voice. Could you want any more? No.

It's beautifully reassuring that everything will be okay, and it's incredible that such a lovely song didn't made it past the demo stage, instead being released as a flexidisc with the zine Smuggler's Way for Record Store Day. Oi, it's fucking amazing. Check it out below.
