Live Review: LISTEN: Olympic Ayres 'The View'

20 May 2012 | 9:00 am | Staff Writer

What do you think of Olympic Ayres' new song The View? Too poppy, or just perfect?

I have to admit that I started writing a glowing review of OLYMPIC AYRES' new track ‘The View’ before I’d even heard the whole song.

Perhaps it was the deluded happiness brought on from hearing the initial synth-pop goodness of ‘The View’ – complete with the extremely catchy “ooh-woh-ooh-woh” tagline that seems mandatory for bands in the Australian indie-synth scene.

Maybe it was the fast-paced lyrics that borderline soulful rapping, yet manage to avoid tackiness. Whatever it was, I could tell I would love the song.

And I did, until the chorus kicked in. I’m the first to admit that I’m too harsh to judge commercial music, and music that sounds like it could become a commercial sing-along hit – and that is exactly what the chorus of ‘The View’ sounds like. But if you overlook the high chance of ‘The View’ earning OLYMPIC AYRES airplay on a certain indie music ruining, bandwagon jumping, commercial radio station - it’s a pretty fucking good song.

Actually, come to think of it – OLYMPIC AYRES are a pretty fucking good band. They manage to draw influence from fellow Australian bands like Cut Copy and Gold Fields, yet push out a vibe that doesn’t feel overdone or cliché. And for that, I give them a massive kudos.
