Live Review: WATCH: Opossom 'Blue Meanies' (Official Video)

3 June 2012 | 9:00 am | Staff Writer

Man in Buddha mask shooting laser beams from his eyes? YES PLEASE! Dom checks out Opossum's new video for 'Blue Meanies'

You may remember Kody Neilson as the lead singer of Kiwi noise-punk act THE MINT CHICKS. While I regret  to inform you that the aforementioned band are no more (it happened in 2010 but I never heard about it), Neilson is back with a new band, OPOSSUM who have just released a CHOICE new video for their latest single.

'Blue Meanies' is the 3rd single from the album Electric Hawaii, available now (and being sold in New Zealand dollars  LOL). The tune is a dreamy psych-pop diddy, languishing in early morning sunlight - think REGURGITATOR's 'Happiness'.

In short, the video captures some youths in bushland on the run from a mysterious masked buddha character, who shoots laser beams from his eye-holes (why not?). There is also a captivating cartoon around the mid-way point that plays like an acid-trip on fast-forward. The clip does not make clear exactly what 'Blue Meanies' are, but I imagine Kody may have sampled some before drawing up the storyboard.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the fuck was going on in this video so you really should check it out yourself to get a better idea.Plus the tune is actually good enough in its own right-a 'Young Folks' style drum beat pulsates beneath some angelic harmonies.
