FLASHBACK: Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Fever to Tell'

30 July 2012 | 9:00 am | Staff Writer

This week we're taking you back to 2003 and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Fever to Tell'. Josh gives us the lowdown.

In 2003 a string of really shit things happened: Michael Jackson is arrested on charges of child molestation, Guy Sebastian becomes the winner on Australian Idol, Madonna sparks media controversy by kissing popstars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Delta Goodrem is diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease.

Along with these heinous events some records were released: 50 Cent - ‘Get Rich or Die Trying’, The Postal Service - ‘Give Up’, Radiohead - ‘Hail To The Thief’, Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds release - ‘Nocturama’ and The Dandy Warhols release ‘Welcome To The Monkey House’; not really the best year ever…

Though cutting through all the trash, THE YEAH YEAH YEAHs were tearing holes in the music scene. Nick Zinner’s heavily overdriven guitars and Brian Chase’s thumping skins (I want to say gently caress but it’s more like  some sort of hardcore bondage fetish…) were wrapping themselves around, weaving through each and every lyric, sigh and moan of the one and only Ms. Karen O.

This record is a must, voted album of the year by the New York Times and listed as one of the 1001 records to hear before you die.

A now rather accomplished trio whose sound has evolved and branched off into various other projects (including Zinner’s 41 Strings project and Karen O’s Stop The Virgens: A Psycho Opera), The Yeah Yeah Yeah's will be gracing our shores with a spot on the upcoming BDO lineup.

If there is a side show, and I’m hoping there will be, I’ll meet you at the bar.
