Live Review: LISTEN: Twerps 'Work It Out’

Melbourne heroes Twerps drop the latest single 'Work It Out' from their brand new self titled debut record

In 2008, a little band called TWERPS got together somewhere in a little town called Melbourne. In 2009, TWERPS released a self-titled EP and now, with a full-length debut album...

(which also happens to be self-titled which makes you think, are they struggling with album names or do they just REALLY like their band name?), which reached the Top 20 on the CMJ College Radio Charts so, we can safely say that yeah, they’re pretty awesome.

TWERPS can leave a pretty interesting impression on first time listeners. My first encounter with the band was when I listened to their track ‘Through the Day’. The track features some pretty simple and relaxed guitar riffs and perhaps even a little clumsy, but it still left me wanting more and I guarantee they’ll do that to you to. Also they’ve left a mark on Jessica Alba! Yeah you read right, the actress tweeted about their song ‘Dreamin’ so if you don’t believe me, believe Dark Angel.

TWERPS have now released a new track entitled ‘Work It Out’ and when I (and Ms Alba) wanted more, they generously delivered. Opening the track with a calm guitar riff, which seems to be becoming their signature, ‘Work It Out’ works its way into a song that makes you want to sway in the sunshine. The song features some lighter chords than some of their previous tracks working most definitely in their favour. There’s also a story behind the song about someone realizing that they’re better off without their dreaded ex, which of course we can all relate to.

‘Work It Out’ is one TWERPS track that I would recommend and whilst I’m recommending things, I’ll tell you to see TWERPS play at one of their upcoming shows. TWERPS will be playing at the Brisbane Festival at Metro Arts on September 22, and also at the Meredith Music Festival later this year with other astounding acts such as GRIMES, REGURGITATOR and POND.

TWERPS has emerged from humble beginnings into what UK magazine Uncut now calls “the best new band in Australia”, so check out their tunes or just go and see them live! They’ll knock your socks back into your sock drawer!
