Live Review: LISTEN: Gypsy And The Cat 'Bloom'

10 October 2012 | 1:30 pm | Lauren Payne

Gypsy and the Cat are the Melbourne indie duo who have been dubbed as the creators of ‘dream-pop’, and their latest single 'Bloom' is available for free.

GYPSY AND THE CAT are the Melbourne indie duo who have been dubbed as the creators of ‘dream-pop’. Indeed, their music sounds like a magical wonderland with light guitars and lyrics that remind you of the fairytales you read as a little kid.

The perfect example of their tales of yore would be the ‘The Piper’s Song’ from the debut album Gilgamesh. The song tells the story of a man of myth singing “In the wilderness, look and you will find him”.

GYPSY AND THE CAT have been hard at work writing new stories to tell us in song form, and perfecting that dream-like sound that they gave us on the debut. Now they have released 'Bloom’, following the release of the first single ‘Sorry’ in July.

Opening with a catchy drum beat and distorted guitar riff, ‘Bloom’ immediately feels like a trip back into GYPSY AND THE CAT’s ethereal world. Xavier Bacash vocals flow into the mix, surrounded by reverb adding to the fantasy even more. ‘Bloom’ has a slight rock element, making the track different from their previous work. The glistening guitars create a light-hearted vibe, making it perfect for those hot summer afternoons where everything feels a bit magical.

Bacash and fellow gypsy Lionel Towers produced the track themselves, sharing the expert company of Dave Fridmann – who’s worked with MGMT and THE FLAMING LIPS – assisting the band with mixing the track.

GYPSY AND THE CAT are embarking on a national tour beginning at the end of this month. The boys will be visiting every capital city (except Darwin), promoting their new album The Late Blue, due for release October 19.

The national tour will give attendees the honor of being the first to listen to GYPSY AND THE CAT’s new album live, so if you want to be ahead of the pack here are the dates to remember:
