It’s not often you can have 2Pac, Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk in the same room but that fantasy becomes reality in the latest triple j mixtape from FLIGHT FACILITIES. The Sydney electro duo has hand picked, overlayed and pieced together iconic hip-hop and R&B from 1992-2002.

Following on from their previous flashback mixtapes, FLIGHT FACILITIES recreate a sense of the decade with news bits - (Bill Clinton elected, Dolly the sheep cloned, Kurt Cobain found dead, Princess Diana’s death) – generating a sense of nostalgia for a time when most of us were just entering the world. Just add a Sampology visual show.

It’s a step back in time, bringing old-school classics like ‘Regulate’ and ‘Killing Me Softly’ back into the spotlight. Clearly the duo did their research, covering the scope of the decade and creating a totally seamless mix. The 90s vibe is more Fresh Prince than Saved By The Bell.

FLIGHT FACILITIES leave each track on long enough to revel in the sing-a-long choruses (Biggie biggie biggie, can’t you see?) before smoothly navigating to the next track. At one point, George W Bush explains why he is entering the war in Iraq and then before we know it – boom! It’s Fatboy Slim.

The mixtape maintains a steady tempo with a focus on vocals and pumping bass which keeps up the energy of the tracks, even 45 minutes in.

Their edit of Moby’s ‘Why Does My Heart’ into Outkast’s ‘Rosa Park’ sounds so much cooler than you could imagine, with a deep groove, reflecting skilled production.
