CHVRCHES have rising on the music radar since their March performance at SXSW. Now they have brought their Scottish synth pop aesthetic and applied a retro reworking to the 2012 muchly-spun hit ‘Hurricane’ from MS MR.

The remix almost sounds like the theme song of an 80s TV show – with electronic blips and glitches scattered throughout the spacey original. We don’t lose sense of Lizzy Plapinger’s vocals but instead find them wrapped inside a futuristic version of the original.

At first, it’s an assault on the senses – a cruder take on the Brooklyn duo’s dreamy pop synth but with that token line “welcome to the inner workings of my mind” suddenly it’s a sing-a-long and a coherent listen.

Not only has the tempo picked up but there is a shift in the mood, shading a sense of hopelessness and despair with an optimistic touch. I’ve never heard a song about being afraid sound so cheerful.

Kudos CHVRCHES, for managing to create their own work without completely ruining the single for the rest of us.

MS MR are one of the artists recently announced to perform at this year’s Splendour in the Grass. Their debut album Secondhand Rapture is set for release this Friday 10th May.
