Cub Scouts Forced To Change Name + Drop 'Paradise' Video

26 August 2013 | 7:12 pm | Tom Hutchins

Is it poor naming skills by Australians? Or just plain bad luck? Well regardless, today we have another act forced to change their name - Cub Scouts.

There seems to be a rising problem within the ranks of the Australian music scene. More and more acts are finding themselves at risk of legal action as they emerge from the realms of underground and unsigned life, and it has nothing to do with their creations. It's their name.

In the past we've seen acts such as Howl turn into Hunting Grounds, Pivot turn into PVT, DZ to DZ DeathraysDanimals turn into Djanimals (now Jonti) to avoid being handed down a lawsuit from companies and bands alike. Is it poor naming skills by Australians? Or just plain bad luck? Well regardless, today we have another act to add to this list - Cub Scouts.

The rising Brisbane 4 piece have announced that they are to be known as CUB SPORT from now on. The reason?  To avoid a possible legal dispute with the Scouts Association of Australia.

Despite using the name for over two years (including during a live performance for the Scouts at their Jamboree earlier this year), the increasing profile of the band from their new EP Paradise both here and overseas caused the leaders in the Scouting movement concern, requesting the band cease the use of its name.

It seems that this isn't going to phase the band and their taking the challenge in their stride, as Cub Sport has their first official release under the new name, the video clip for 'Paradise' which has just dropped. The single and accompanying EP have already become the biggest in the band’s career, launching at this year’s Splendour in the Grass and heading on the road this September with Jinja Safari.

Leading man, Tim Nelson, assures fans that the band was and always will stay the same in stating “It is a shame to lose the name we’ve worked so hard over the last few years building, but as we make our inroads to the US and UK markets, it’s important that we make the change now. We’re pretty positive about it all to be honest. The new name sounds so cool it needs a racing stripe and for our fans, we continue to be and will always be the Cubbies.”

Cub Sport made their first trip overseas earlier this year, with a successful set at the UK’s Great Escape festival as well as shows in Europe and South East Asia. And now with plans for the Paradise EP to be released in the back quarter of 2013 - it really does seem like the perfect time to announce the change.

We wish the band all the best under their new name, and we're sure we'll be hearing a heap more of Cub Sport in the years to come.
