LIVE REVIEW: Peace @ The Zoo, Brisbane

23 September 2013 | 11:08 pm | Lauren Payne

One of the biggest artists coming out of the UK, Peace recently graced the stage at The Zoo with Brisbane legends Millions on support.

Basically if you're grabbing an act from the UK that has tabloids falling at their feet, of course you have to book a killer opener. I honestly think they couldn't have chosen anyone better than MILLIONS.

With a thunderous drum beat and crunchy guitars that just make you melt, MILLIONS attack Brisbane's live music venue The Zoo with the full force of their instruments. The three piece are just wonderful musicians and they seem to get better and better with every show they perform. Now this is great of course, but now we must make way for the main attraction.

The United Kingdom's PEACE enter the stage with a demeanour that only the ARCTIC MONKEYS could imitate. They are the meaning of cool, THE RAMONES reborn; I'm not even kidding. The opening track is a banger and instead of stopping between tracks to say hey, PEACE just push on with their poppy drums and distorted guitars

The bassist drops up and down as if he is the smoothest person in the world; so entangled in the music. The lead guitarist jumps around with his hair blowing behind him and the drummer, well this guy has energy just bursting off of him. But you can't forget those sweet, sultry, yet also rough vocals that lead each track. PEACE are nailing it and they're only two songs in.

Any girl would swoon when hearing the accent of lead singer, he introduces 'Float Forever' one if their slower numbers and not only do the girls swoon, but the boys do too. The track starts of quiet and cute until you hear the full brunt of the band. Still being quiet, but showing their power in holding back.

A more energetic track follows forcing the whole crow to dance. All of a sudden it goes quiet, the band brood around the stage before erupting in a wave of heavy drums and bass; cruisey guitars gliding over it all. 'Toxic' is the next energetic number and the audience are all dancing now except a quiet third at the back.

Soon a cover of DISCLOSURE's 'White Noise' sparks a real surprise with the audience, luckily they all know the words and it's a wonderful rendition. Hearing an almost jazz-like cover of the track actually shows an interesting take on the original, Aluna Francis, of ALUNAGEORGE, has had her sultry vocals replaced with a smoother vocal and the various synths replaced with a heavy drum beat and a brooding bass. The crowd still dance and the music keeps thumping on.

Soon PINK FLOYD's 'Another Brick In the Wall' makes an appearance, an overall better cover for the band really because it suits their genre a bit more. Soon a punter says, "at least they're playing British music for their covers," and really you didn't really see the connection until then as you would probably be, like me, to invested in the music to care where it came from.Their bigger hit 'Wraith' is next and by god is it a good show! The audience and band are in full swing and we know we are in the climax of the set, I think.

'Higher Than the Sun' next? Yeah, climax for sure since the energy in the room  is palpable.

Another slow song breaks up the set with wonderful harmonies filling the room 'California Daze'  is the track that shows you how talented the boys actually are. Starting with just a soft guitar riff, the track soon breaks out into a slow band jam that the audience sway too like palm trees in the wind. Of course one can't forget the epic guitar solo as well, with every note the track sounds more and more intricate. Total bliss.

"It's far away but I like it," the actual words of vocalist about Brisbane, true and ending on 'Lovesick', PEACE have just performed a great show that you honestly barely see out of the UK.
