Live Review: EXCLUSIVE ALBUM STREAM: Dresses 'Sun Shy' LP

23 October 2013 | 4:36 pm | Lauren Payne

We take a look at Dresses' newest LP Sun Shy before it's release through Shock Records.

Straight out of Portland, Oregon, DRESSES have come sprouting out with a new LP expected to land on October 25. The duo that includes Jared Ryan Maldonalo on vocals, guitar and the lovely ukelele, and Timothy Heller on vocals and guitar, produce splendid sweet pop sounds that mix wonderfully high vocals and harmonies.

DRESSES have quite a quirky style that shines on Sun Shy. Each song is cute and calm, just like the album's title and will definitely be one for acoustic covers during music class. The catchy vocals on the first track, 'Back To Life' give you an indication of how wonderful DRESSES are and how much you'll love the record the more you listen to it.

Blissful harmonies emerge on 'Blew My Mind' between both members. The second track does have a fuller sound with some lovely trickling synths flying a top a large band sound that includes a soft drum beat and group of strings. DRESSES definitely have a lovely aesthetic that they have stuck to, every track sound natural and grows organically like a plant in the sunshine.

The title track 'Sun Shy' passes over vocal duties and it's nice hearing a male voice as well as the sweet female coos. They both sound wonderful paired together and you honestly just fall in love with DRESSES during 'Sun Shy'. You can't help it. Every track seems to shine brightly and ooze happiness.

Of course then your a little shaken after seeing a track called 'Friends Are Dead', but even this track is nice and bright, it's just lead by a heavy drum beat that is only slightly more ominous than the rest of the album. It doesn't really get any darker than this on the record which is a okay with me. 'Painting Roses' is a very sweet Alice-In-Wonderland inspired story that's followed by 'Gotta Love', a quieter track that just has lovely vocals and deep guitars pushing it on through.

Sun Shy is to be released via Shock Records on October 25 and you should buy it if you'd prefer a nice quiet Sunday afternoon during your summer.
