INTERVIEW: MO

14 October 2013 | 4:41 pm | Lauren Payne

We had a chat with MO about working with her hero and her upcoming Australian visit.

She's got fantastic style, she has videos that shine beautifully against the fantastic tracks they feature, spanning a range of genres, and her first collaboration was with one of your heroes. This is the life of Danish songstress .

With her catchy hooks and just flat out awesome lyrics,  has become the artist we all love but are also slightly jealous of. We sat down and had a chat with the girl herself to talk about her first ever Australian show that is coming up, her collaboration with DIPLO and what life is like for this lovely girl.

So many people have compared you to Grimes, it has been floating around on music site everywhere, what's your opinion on the comparison?

I really, really love Grimes and everything, but I don't think our sound is very similar. I can understand why people compare us because I think, without knowing it, we both have the same attitude towards the way we feel about stuff, you know? That's the similarities I think.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion on your sound, how would you personally describe your it?

Well overall I would say it's electro-indie-pop with vibes like street and hip-hop, but also soul. I think that would be it.

In Denmark are there a lot of artists similar to you, or does the music tend to sway into a different area?

Well there's definitely a lot of different music and different stuff and they can be very streamlined. But I think there are a lot of very cool bands and a lot of very cool people doing music because they can do without you know? I really like the Danish music scene but you know, Denmark is a small country [laughs].

You've definitely branched out further than the Danish music scene, since we are listening to you here in Australia, even Diplo is a fan! You recently recorded 'XX 888' with him, how did that collaboration begin?

It actually started because I was in an interview with a British magazine where I said that a dream collaboration would be to work with Major Lazer. Then there were actually some fans on the internet, on Twitter, who were like writing me and Diplo saying please make this happen or something and they just wrote we love her so, my manager just chased it. Then we got to meet up for a session in Amsterdam, so we did that, that was how it started. I was so thrilled that it got to happen.

Do you have any special plans for your upcoming Australian show?

No, the most important thing for me, is when we play we can just let go and just get in touch with the music, and just let go and go crazy so I'm going to focus on being energetic and just be intentional so that people will have the experience of a true performance. I don't want too many things, I don't want to play a role, I just want to be myself and just go crazy [laughs], at least that's what I strive to do.

That sounds fantastic, if this show works out well do you plan on travelling down more often?

I would love to come down again!

We'll have to give you some of our famous coffee that so many artists have told me they love..

Yay! [laughs] I could really use a coffee right now. It's eight in the morning here, which isn't that bad but I'm always working late into the night. I'm used to getting up at 10 actually.

So after your Australian show what have you got on your agenda?

After the show in Australia, I think we are going to Iceland. There's this Iceland Airway thing going on and we're going to support Major Lazer on the tour. I can't wait for that.

Wow getting to tour with one of your heroes now too! If you admire Major Lazer, who are some other artists you look up to?

Santigold, M.I.A, Sonic Youth, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs; Blood Orange has tracks I love, there is just so many. Oh, and Grimes as you mentioned before, but there is just so many that I admire on different values.
