IN THEIR SHOES: Custom Sneaker Exhibition & Charity Auction

24 October 2013 | 12:48 pm | Lauren Payne

Warner Music Australia have officially began the inaugural IN THEIR SHOES initiative which sees over 70 musicians create their own custom sneakers.

IN THEIR SHOES is a project that has combined Converse sneakers, Sharpie coloured markers and a huge variety of musicians to raise awareness for something almost everybody has had experience with.

Warner Music Australia has come together with Converse, Sharpie and Ebay, after raising over $12,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in 2012, to create the IN THEIR SHOES initiative, aptly named because of the resulting hand-decorated Converse sneakers.

The IN THEIR SHOES initiative was unintentionally sparked back when Warner Music Australia were recording their Under The Bridge Sessions for their blog Cool Accidents. The Warner Music crew were set to record GROUPLOVE playing under a bridge when out of the blue, the crew noticed a pair of sneakers that GROUPLOVE singer and artist in her own right, Hannah Hooper, had decorated from scratch.

This sparked the idea to get musicians from around the world involved in something much bigger than we could all imagine. Over the past 18 months, Warner Music have asked musicians to customise their own pair of white Converse sneakers and many in turn created some fantastic designs with their own flavour using Sharpie fabric markers.

Now over 70 pairs of sneakers have been designed by local and international artists who wanted to help raise money for cancer. Some of the artists who created their own designs were: KIMBRA, ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI, BLOODS, BON IVER, DJANGO DJANGO, FIDLAR, GROUPLOVE, THE MEDICS, THE NATIONAL, NEW ORDER, POND, PORTUGAL. THE MAN, TAME IMPALA and WAVVES.

An auction for the sneakers will be held through Ebay where bids will start from $99 for each pair of original sneakers with all proceeds going towards finding a cure for cancer. The auction will begin on October 24 and close on October 29.

The designs will be gradually revealed in the website, www.intheirshoes.com.au but the best place to see these designs will be at the full unveiling at The Standard in Sydney on October 24. The 70 pairs of sneakers will be on display and entry is only a single gold coin donation. Whilst there you'll be treated to an awesome DJ set by our own PURPLE SNEAKERS DJS, as well as live art by Numskull and Gemma O'Brien and more company than you can poke a Sharpie at.
