Live Review: LISTEN: Hugo Frederick 'Hanging Gardens'

4 December 2013 | 1:44 pm | Nick Luke

Melbourne-local producer Hugo Frederick releases new single 'Hanging Gardens' from upcoming EP 'Waved'.

25 year old Melbourne-based electronic producer, HUGO FREDERICK has been turning heads of late with his particular brand of eclectic computer music. Releasing his last mind-bending single through the Stoney Roads Vol. 1 compilation the young producer shows no sign of slowing down, especially with his latest offering entitled 'Hanging Gardens'.

The moody sounds of HUGO's latest track are other-wordly to say the least. Interwoven sounds of washy synthesizers, lo-fi drum machines, and hazy rolling bass saturate the track in ways that feel wonderfully wonky yet coherent. To be blunt, it sounds somewhere between the worlds of ACTRESS, ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER and even STEVE REICH.

Rushes of bleeps and bloops colour the vast stretches of soaring ambient synths, a sound that sits in the midst of ambient glitch and footwork - rhythms pulsate in and out of view, rolling ever-forwards whilst tessellating loops fold into one another.

As the track 'Hanging Gardens' is part of FREDERICK's upcoming 'Waved' EP we can be sure to expect more mind-altering, genre-defying music from this guy in the near future.
