Live Review: DZ Deathrays 'Fixations' (Al-P Of MSTRKRFT Remix)

8 September 2014 | 12:00 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Taking on DZ DEATHRAY’s ‘Reflective Skull’, AL-P has heightened the intensity of that spine-tingling metallic sound and somehow, has made it dirtier.

I’m calling it now. Put it on record. DZ DEATHRAYS are probably one of the best live acts in the world right now. Demand for the band has seen them tour their sophomore record ‘Black Rat’ tirelessly across Australia for the first half of 2014, ending their domination of the country at Splendour in the Grass back in July.

They’ve picked up again, this time taking ‘Black Rat’ over to Europe, and slaying stages all across the continent, one distorted note at a time. Their minimalistic (in terms of sheer numbers) approach to music is outweighed by the monstrous noise created by Shane and Simon, one that resonates entirely as original and entirely as destructive.

AL-P of my favourite mid to late 00’s duo MSTRKRFT, has brought back that original sound that we danced hard to back then (granted I was like 12, so I danced to it in Mum’s car on the way to school). Taking on DZ DEATHRAY’s ‘Reflective Skull’, AL-P has heightened the intensity of that spine-tingling metallic sound and somehow, has made it dirtier.

Opening with jagged percussive hits that blast out at intervals, straight away, you can tell it’s a track that has some vein of MSTRKRFT in it.

It continues to just stay huge throughout its entirety. Huge in its demeanour, in its sound and in its delivery, it’s just one of those remixes that makes sense. It’s been pulled off to a T and it just sounds so appropriate, somehow going from this gritty, distorted brand of thrash-punk to a completely alternate degree of dance music that we’ve been missing for so long.

Definitely a sound to be sought after, AL-P has done this banger of a track great justice.
