Astral People's Top Six OutsideIn Festival Moments

18 November 2014 | 9:56 am | Tony Kingston

With the event only being a couple of weeks away, we hit up OutsideIn Festival organisers Astral People for their top six moments from the past two years.

Here at Purple Sneakers HQ, we're big fans of OutsideIn Festival and quite a number of our team members have witnessed some truly amazing performances during the first two years of its existence.

With only two weeks to go until the 2014 edition takes place, we asked the organisers of the event Astral People, which moments (so far) will remain with them forever. Take it away boys!

ASTRAL PEOPLE PRESENTS THE AVALANCHES: SINCE I LEFT YOU - OutsideIn 2013

An idea that formed between Astral brothers (for real) Lee and Jonti to re-create this magical album via a 12-piece strong band, made up of our Astral People management, roster and friends. The idea in our heads sounded amazing in the lead up, but we quickly realised that the 20 minute sound check we had scheduled for them on the day definitely wasn't enough.

Once it was done and dusted, it became the highlight of our festival and lead to us taking the project to great heights at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Festival.

THOM YORKE - OutsideIn 2012

Having joked about this a week prior to the event that "Thom might swing by", it came at an even bigger surprise when Mark Pritchard on the day gave Vic a call and said "Hey man is it cool to organise some door spots for Thom Yorke?". Vic didn't really know what to do so he just went and told Lee who proceeded to shit his pants. We fed old mate Thom a few tinnies and basically stared at him whilst he was getting down to acts like Shigeto and Africa Hitech. Come to think of it, the whole thing was pretty weird.

SHIGETO - OutsideIn 2012

Shigeto was always an artist on our radar from the start of Astral, although until this point we were quite unsure of his crossover here in Australia. His original productions were always a cut above the rest for us, however it's his live show that really caught our eye. He hit the main stage into his stride and put on one of the most passionate performances we've seen to date and wowed everyone in the crowd and those side of stage (Thom Yorke included). He told us afterwards that it was probably the most memorable show that he's ever played, mainly because he didn't see it coming (and neither did we).

FREDDIE GIBBS - OutsideIn 2013

After having Zomby cancel his Australian tour (because he's a dick), we really needed Freddie to get in no troubles and take the place of our headliner. To be honest, up until the start of the tour, it was all still up in the air! We changed the tour route multiple times due to visa issues - basically all the usual hip hop touring issues. Thankfully he got in, took the main stage at OutsideIn and absolutely ripped it in front of thousands of people. It was one of the most energetic and cohesive hip hop sets we've ever seen.

WINNING SMAC AWARD - OutsideIn 2012

FBi Radio have always been close to the heart of OutsideIn. They're our main partners and without them the festival couldn't exist, as they support a lot of the local and international talent that we consistently push in Australia. Through their support we were lucky enough to reach a sell out in our first year. We honestly can't thank them enough. To win 'Best Music Event' in the SMAC Awards for our debut OutsideIn was a huge surprise and a moment we still cherish to this day.

BADBADNOTGOOD - OutsideIn 2013

Around the time we started Astral People, there was a video floating around of these kids covering Camel by Flying Lotus on YouTube and it just blew our minds how talented they were. As soon as we started touring acts, BBNG were top of the list for first full bands (as opposed to solo acts/DJs) we wanted to tour and we had to wait until the second OutsideIn to bring them out. They absolutely slayed the main stage and we were graced with our first proper mosh pit at one of our events. We're really stoked to be bringing them out again over summer.
