Live Review: Sunbeam Sound Machine 'Wandering, I'

19 November 2014 | 12:00 am | Hannah Galvin

Nick Sowersby, aka Sunbeam Sound Machine, has revealed, 'Wandering, I' - the second official single off his debut LP, Wonderer.

Within the walls of a quaint Collingwood garage sits Nick Sowersby - the talented multi-instrumentalist creating spine-tingling bliss under the name SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE. With the knowledge of his debut LP at the ready, he's just released it's second single, 'Wandering, I'.

Although this word could be scrutinised for being used too often, Sowersby's work honestly does epitomise an extremely beautful soundscape. His technique in painting his instrumentation with layers upon layers of sonic texture is marvellous, as the volume of guitars, keys, drums and other percussive elements used paired with the format they're collectively recorded in champions a much larger sound than what is actually being accomplished in reality.

With this sound is the style that brands Sunbeam Sound Machine - a plentiful guitar jangle so luscious and sensitive, it actually impacts upon the listener in that it nurtures you into a state of trust and romance; simply from just how skillfully it's being applied to the space. Throw in Sowersby's ability to rid the song's hierarchical structure by marrying the balanced importance of vocals to instrumentation, and you have quite the unique songwriter.

I say all of this in a such a broad sense as it is exactly what Sunbeam Sound Machine's craft continues to achieve time and time again, yet still manages to break every single track up, such as 'Wandering, I', in order for each sonic entity to stand proudly on its own two feet.
