Live Review: Tropics 'Rapture'

8 January 2015 | 11:59 pm | Hollie Cunningham

After releasing the first track 'Blame' to his upcoming album a couple of months ago, Tropics now brings us the title track 'Rapture'.

Introducing the title track 'Rapture' to the sophomore album from London boy's Chris Ward aka TROPICS. He released the first track to his musical journey that is 'Rapture' 2 months ago - 'Blame' was the first we had heard from Chris since his 'Home & Consonance' EP over a year ago, and it set the scene to his softened sound deeply felt with emotions with what seems to be less electronic input.

'Rapture' has a real elegance about it, with the simple yet strong pairing of shuffling percussion and piano, it has a warm seductive feel of being in a candle lit jazz piano bar, spotlight on TROPICS. His gentle vocals transude into every part of you, a rare talent similar to one of his childhood influences 'Arthur Russell'- although he has a different sound, Chris has developed that ability to immerse people in his lyrics and let them get lost.

He doesn't like to pigeon hole his sound but he says it's essentially soul music with inputs of minimal jazz and electronic, according to Tropics though, no 2 tracks on this latest album are the same, however he's produced and ordered them as a cohesive piece in his intention to take you on a journey.
