Live Review: HEALTH 'NEW COKE'

4 May 2015 | 12:00 pm | Tom Hutchins

They were born from a DIY scene that bred people that like things loud, and HEALTH haven't given that up at all.

Everyone's most-loved noise-rock band, HEALTH are officially back. It's been a while, but the first sounds from their new album are pretty special.

To be clear, the new single 'NEW COKE' isn't their most noise-based release, but if you've ever seen the LA natives live, you'll know what I'm talking about. They were born from a DIY scene that bred people that like things loud, and HEALTH haven't given that up at all. 'NEW COKE' is backed by an anthemic bass, that pounds continuously throughout - and as the track continues, ridiculously loud synths drill themselves deep into the mix.

The vocals of Benjamin Jared Miller are atmospheric and mirror the horror-themed soundtrack eating them up, seemingly keeping things calm and strangely blissful, but once the sharp sounds burst through, there is no escaping the brutality that is and has always been HEALTH. It's ultra-violence in music, and no one does it better.

The accompanying clip is pretty intense too, what begins as HEALTH and friends partying at a show, ends with one member running alone without a shirt on and two other members projectile vomiting in slow motion. It's not one for the squeamish, but I still highly recommend it.

'NEW COKE' is taken from HEALTH's third album, DEATH MAGIC. It's been six years in the making, and the band worked with longtime Kanye West engineer Andrew Dawson, Mars Volta engineer Lars Stalfors, and Bjork producer/mixer The Haxan Cloak. They addressed the long wait via Facebook...

I know some of you guys are pissed that it's taken us 6 years to put out a record, but we swore we would wait till Mayweather fought Pacquiao.
