Lion Babe are New York duo Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman. We suggest you make a mental note of those names.

LION BABE are New York duo Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman. We suggest you make a mental note of those names.

LION BABE released their self-titled EP back in March, but this track wasn’t actually featured on it. ‘Wonder Woman’ is pretty self-explanatory in terms of the message the pair are trying to put across – think Beyonce’s poptastic blend of feminism meets Rihanna’s sexualised sass with a dollop of classic 70s funk coming at you via some top notch R’n’B production. These comparisons aren’t too far beyond LION BABE’s grasp, considering that the track was produced by none other than Pharrell (who also makes an appearance on the backing vocals).

With a similar swagger to songs like Shamir’s recent track ‘Call It Off’, Hervey and Goodman have created a rambunctious groove that isn’t going to settle down quietly. Goodman takes a back seat in the video, whilst Hervey creeps and crawls across a dusty desert landscape, looking like a total babe and lioness.

The opening sounds ever so like that of The Who’s ‘Who Are You?’ with sultry guitar, bombastic bass and cocksure beats; this supposedly purposeful nod to a 70s staple makes Lion Babe’s track seem instantly recognisable yet distinctly fresh.

'Wonder Woman' and the duo’s EP, Lion Babe, are out now via Outsiders/Polydor. For those who enjoy a good dose of funky house, the original track has recently been given a reworking by NVOY – check it out below:
