Live Review: Alpine 'Foolish' (Hopium Remix)

9 June 2015 | 11:00 am | Emma Jones

Melbourne duo Hopium surpass already high expectations with their remix of Alpine's new single 'Foolish'.

We picked Melbourne's HOPIUM as an Artist to Watch for this year, and it seems like we got it right again! First receiving a bit of love for their track 'Cut' last year, followed by 'Dreamers', and more recently, 'Right Now'.

Each of these songs has further cemented Hopium's place as serious up-and-comers, with talent and potential to spare, and they have once again continued this with their next release.

Stepping up for remix duties of the newly returned Alpine and their new single 'Foolish', Hopium have stepped away from their eclectic RnB, and turned 'Foolish' into something entirely their own. With the added and obvious presence of electronica over the indie pop track, the remix features thudding bass, muffled electronic drums and grooves that would make Alpine jealous.

The chorus explodes and opens up a colourful arrangement of chopped vocals, skittering beats and synths before breaking and building up once again. The thudding bass continues and gives the rework just that little bit more extra depth, further distancing the remix from the original. The slowed tempo also allows for Hopium to have a bit more time; to take it easy and let the groove take over.

This remix surpassed my already high expectations of what Hopium are capable of, and only reiterates our prediction of them being Artists to Watch for this year, not to mention years to come. Here's hoping we hear a few more Hopium remixes - that can only be a good thing!
