Live Review: PREMIERE: High-tails 'Information' (SPOD Remix)

19 June 2015 | 1:52 pm | Tom Hutchins

If you were hoping for a dancefloor filler, then you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a psyched-out pop number, then listen below.

What do you think happens when one of the country's most promising acts gets involved with one of the country's greatest/strangest musical minds? You get SPOD taking on HIGH-TAILS. But not in a bloodsport kind of way, more, a beautiful remix based romance kind of way.

The effects that SPOD puts on the original are pretty subtle, but they create a vastly different sound. The original sports a fast guitar line backed by a groove-laden bass line. The production is clean, it's pacey, yet retains melancholic pop qualities.

SPOD takes the melancholic side of things and compounds it. The guitars are almost wiped out, distorted into a wonky backing for a Madchester styled off-kilter beat and whirling synths. What stays almost the same are the vocals from Nicholas Griffith, they were the main melancholic centrepiece of the original, and the same goes for the remix. They guide the listener through the layering and distortion, and allow there to be a sustaining flow throughout.

The man, the myth, the legend said this about remixing the High-tails original: "I chose to keep the original tempo in the remix because I really liked it, then re-wrote the bassline on my Moog to make it a bit greasy and added some warm analog synths to moosh it out. I really wanted to go with a 90's Manchester kinda dance vibe."

If you were hoping for a dancefloor filler, then you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a psyched-out pop number, then listen to the PREMIERE below.
