Live Review: Anderson .Paak ‘Switch Up’

ANDERSON .PAAK (yes the full stop does go there), is back with some new music in the shape of ‘Switch Up’.

ANDERSON .PAAK  (yes the full stop does go there), is back with some new music in the shape of ‘Switch Up’. He had been busy resampling and retelling his 2014 LP Venice through a series of videos and working with Doja Cat for their bass-heavy track ‘Shifty’, but he's back to what he does best, hopefully signalling towards a new EP project to follow the single.

Experimental and self-produced, .Paak’s excellent elocution and distinctive voice whispers and croons over the glitchy Jai Paul beats and undercurrent bass line.

The track does indeed switch up a couple of times, providing some interesting experimentation and deviation from the main housey beat. It descends into a swampy underwater bit at three minutes, a heady mix of synth and bass and blurs.

Things are dialled down a tad and .Paak seems almost sweet and caring compared to some of the more outlandish tracks on Venice. He murmurs that ‘all I see is lip gloss’ and promises to teach his girl the ‘blessings from the karma sutra’. It’s a sensual, seductive, sexy number and plays to its style with funk guitars and rumbling muddled bass.

Another smooth slice of Cali sunshine from the LA-based vocalist. Listen below:
